If I suspect I have a bad reference, how do I keep them from ruining my career?

Most employers will not call your past employers without first obtaining your permission. The easiest way for you to avoid a bad reference is simply not listing that person as a reference.

 

Unless you've given specific references from your previous job, it's likely that the potential employer would not contact that particular person or workplace about you.

 

It's a good idea to update your references as you progress in your career so that potential employers are receiving the most accurate, up-to-date information about your work history.
