How can I prepare references to be contacted?

When you trust someone enough to ask them to vouch for you in the professional realm, you want to treat that relationship with care. After you've asked someone to be a reference for you, don't leave it there.

 

Each time you apply to a new job, reach out to your references to give them a heads up that they might be contacted by a particular employer.

 

It's important to give your references notice so they're not caught off guard. Maintaining regular contact with your references is a good idea. The reference check is typically one of the last steps in the interview process, so you'll want to be sure that your references are around and available to speak on your behalf.
